Honma: World's Most Expensive Golf Club Set

Need to find the perfect trunk accessory for your Aston Martin? You could fill it with forty five thousand dollars in one-dollar bills, or you could spend it all on a set of the world's most expensive golf clubs made by Japanese manufacturers 'Honma'.

When you order a set of 14 golf clubs that cost forty five thousand dollars, you would expect some input into the design, and that is exactly what you get with Honma. You can choose the head shape, the shaft, the grip, how much 24k gold plating you would like and how much Pt 1000 platinum detailing you feel would be obnoxious enough for each club. The clubs are manufactured in Japan to the exact length and weight that you specify. You can even have initials engraved on each club, or do as I would and have Japanese swear words stamped on those babies.

Jack Nicholson, Donald Trump and Danny Devito choose Honma clubs, which regularly feature in fancy magazines that thousands of people subscribe to, but only 1% can afford to buy anything from the pages.

Of course, for my mullet wearing readers, cheap replicas are available; you could probably hustle an imitation Honma set for a few hundred bucks on ebay. A word of advice though, if you pull the world’s most expensive golf clubs out of a Camry, I don’t think you’re going to be fooling anyone.

Craig Jones: Lowest Australian Golf Score 59

Queenslander, Craig Jones has shot the lowest golf score in Australian professional golfing history, with a remarkable 13 under 59 at the $15,000 Horton Park Pro-am Championship on the Sunshine Coast.

"I can't describe the feeling when I hit that putt on the last. I knew I had a chance, but couldn't believe it when it went in," he said. "I've been home from Japan for three weeks and haven't been playing very well. It was just one of those days when everything went right."

The 38-year old golfer won the 1994 New Zealand Open but has campaigned in Japan in recent years.

Jones holed a 6m putt on the last hole to card the amazing score at Maroochydore, bettering Brad McIntosh who was the only other golfer to shoot 59 in Australia. McIntosh shot his 59 in the second round of the Queensland PGA at Emerald Lakes on the Gold Coast in November 2005. However, the short Emerald Lakes layout was a par 71 course whereas Horton Park is a championship par 72 course.

Jones' round included 10 birdies, two eagles and a bogey. He birdied every par four on the course. "When I hit the putt on the last I knew it had a chance and I can't describe the feeling when it went in," said Jones, who will join the Japanese Tour on Sunday.

Scotland's Most Expensive House

Taxi and tanning tycoon Stevie Malcolm is building Scotland’s most expensive house - a £9 million palace overlooking Gleneagles’ famous Queen’s golf course.

Glasgow Private Hire boss Stevie Malcolm’s incredible home is being built around a £1 million aquarium which rises three storeys through the centre of the property. The 44-year-old tycoon paid £1.3 million for the plot, one of 13 in an exclusive gated development called Queen’s Crescent. By the time it is completed in 18 months, it will have cost Malcolm almost £9 million as Scotland’s most expensive new build.

He was the first to snap up one of the plots, which were sold last year by the world famous five-star hotel and golf resort in Perthshire as part of an £18 million investment for the 2014 Ryder Cup to be held there. His plot, the second most costly of the 13, is one of only six that lead directly on to the golf course. The taxi boss, who was divorced from wife Julie in 2006 after 20 years of marriage, said: “I’m trying to get back with my wife at the moment, so I don’t need any s****.

Malcolm, who bought his cab firm from late crime boss Tam McGraw’s wife, is a golf fanatic. "Every time the taxi business gets mentioned, it causes problems. Every time a story goes in the paper, you get crackpots calling, looking for money."

"It’s a big house, 21,000sq ft. It’s going to take a year and a half to build. The foundations are in and it’s coming out of the ground now. I’d heard Madonna and Sean Connery had shown interest in the site." A construction source said: "This house is the last word in bespoke luxury. The aquarium alone costs £1 million and is being designed by an American specialist."

"There are 13 plots but Malcolm is the first to get building. Some very wealthy people, along with property speculators and construction firms, have bought the other dozen plots. It seems the credit crunch does not extend to Glasgow’s private hire businesses."

The site, which overlooks the third fairway of the Queen’s Course, was a hive of activity last week as a construction team prepared the giant foundations for the futuristic dream home. At 21,000sq ft, it will be about five times the size of a typical luxury five-bedroom detached home. It boasts six bedrooms, including Malcolm’s massive round master bedroom - complete with Austin Powers-style circular bed. The basement level has indoor and outdoor swimming pools and jacuzzis, along with two bars, a barbecue area and his and hers changing rooms.

Malcolm, who once owned Scotland’s largest chain of tanning salons, even has a room for sunbeds. The basement area includes a self-contained flat for staff or guests that opens on to a private courtyard.

An ultra-modern glass and steel spiral staircase soars upwards around the tubular, three-storey, custom-built fish tank and there is also a private lift.

The ground floor has a formal dining room with a glass wall and a huge kitchen and office containing a bank of CCTV screens and a boardroom table. The first floor, with four enormous bedrooms and en suites, also has an open plan living area with floor-to-ceiling French doors leading to a terrace that curves around the mansion.

Architects’ plans for the house also show a three-car garage with electronic doors. The top of the home is dominated by Malcolm’s circular bedroom, a huge bathing area and separate dressing room. Special glass is being used on floor-to-ceiling walls to avoid cracked panes from wayward golf balls.

The gated development is protected by a gatehouse and code-operated electric security gate. Malcolm and car dealer Tommy Wallace bought Glasgow Private Hire - previously known as Mac Cabs - from McGraw’s wife Margaret, known as The Jeweller, about eight years ago.

The Sunday Mail revealed five years ago that Malcolm was behind the growing taxi empire along with Tan Ko - then Scotland’s largest chain of sunbed salons. In 1990, detectives seized more than 100 stolen cars which were being rented out to another taxi firm owned by Malcolm.

He was arrested at the same time as former McGraw associates David Deans and Robert Roden. Police found £36,000 under a sofa in Malcolm’s home and a gun at another address. Malcolm - who has a £1 million home in Whitecraigs, near Glasgow - was never charged but Deans and Roden were both convicted of car crime.

Malcolm has held directorships in various taxi firms and went into partnership with Allan Gibson, 47, in Edinburgh City Private Hire a year ago. Gibson had run Glasgow-based Network Private Hire, linked to the McGovern crime family.

Golf Fan: Barack Obama

Golf fan Barack Obama who plays off a 16 handicap, donned his khakis, a red polo, and a baseball cap, carried his clubs from his Secret Service motorcade to a waiting motorcade of golf carts. The Democratic nominee dropped by Luana Hills Country Club in Kailua, Hawaii today for a round of golf - the second golf outing of his week long vacation.

The entourage left the clubhouse for the "high risk/high rewards" 18-hole course that boats breathtaking views of nearby Mount Olomana and Ko’olau.

When Luana Hills first opened in 1993, the club charged a lifetime membership fee of $250,000. Today the course is open to the public and, sure to please Republicans, the club’s website boasts, “The hidden valley course is a site for feature films and a frequent stop of celebrities visiting Hawai’i, including former golfing President Bill Clinton.” No word on if the club will update its website to include “celebrity” guest golfer Barack Obama.

Alas, press was not permitted to photograph Obama on the 10th hole, which was adjacent to the clubhouse where we were permitted to wait for the candidate. When the staffer minding the press pool was notified that Obama was nearing the green within eyeshot, we were escorted back to the press bus and out of sight.

In no way are these stories related besides the golf connection; however it was amusing to note that shortly after Bush made the sacrifice to 'quit' golf he was admitted for knee surgery.

15 handicapped US President George W. Bush said in an interview out Tuesday that he quit playing golf in 2003 out of respect for the families of US soldiers killed in the conflict in Iraq, now in its sixth year.

"I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal," he said in an interview for Yahoo! News and Politico magazine.
“I don’t want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander-in-chief playing golf,” he said. “I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them.”

The US president traced his decision to the August 19, 2003 bombing of UN headquarters in Baghdad, which killed the world body’s top official in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. “I remember when de Mello, who was at the UN, got killed in Baghdad as a result of these murderers taking this good man’s life. And I was playing golf — I think I was in central Texas — and they pulled me off the golf course and I said, it’s just not worth it anymore to do,” said Bush.

Bush's last round of golf as president dates back to October 13, 2003, according to meticulous records kept by CBS news. On the day of the bombing two months earlier, he had cut short his golf game at the 12th hole and returned to his ranch in tiny Crawford, Texas.

Fattest Golfer Tournament

Every year at the Yale University Golf Course in New Haven Connecticut, the world's fattest golfers gather to compete in the 'Fatty Open', brainchild of the clubs obese chef, Dave Horton.

Horton came up with the idea in 1997 while playing the course one day with a friend who pointed out some other fat people; Horton said "let's have a tournament for them!"

The tournament itself is more about being fat and food than golf. It's mainly just some fun with proceeds going to the Universities psychiatric institute to help fund the study of none other than eating disorders.

The tournament has fat people roll in from all over the US, however no women have yet to enter. Golfers are weighed in by a forklift before the one day competition begins, with fines going to players that are under 250 pounds. Prizes are given to the player with the highest blood pressure, like 5kg's of peperoni and everyone gets a goody bag which contains Oreos, Slim Jims and a pack of Alka-Seltzer. Heaviest foursome wins 20kgs of butter. Other competitions during the tournament include 'closest to buffet' in which case the winner receives a microwave, in the advent of a tie, closest to the mayonnaise jar wins.

Golfers: Killed by Lightning

Golfers make up 5% of all people killed by lightning according to a study by the National Lightning Safety Institute (NLSI). They also concluded that lightning can still find golfers hiding under trees, and kill them.

In October of 1997, the NLSI published their findings of 35 years research on lightning fatalities in the USA between 1959-1994. Here is a chart which summarizes the report:

1. Location of Incident:

40% Unreported.
27% Open fields & recreation areas (not golf).
14% Under trees (not golf).
8% Water-related (boating, fishing, swimming…).
5% Golf/golf under trees.
3% Heavy equipment and machinery-related.
2.4% Telephone-related.
0.7% Radio, transmitter & antenna-related.

2. Gender of victims = 84% male; 16% female.

3. Months of most incidents = June 21%, July 30%, Aug 22%.

4. Days of week of most incidents = Sun./Wed./Sat.

5. Time of day of most incidents = 2 PM to 6 PM.

6. Number of victims = One (91%), two or more (9%).

7. Deaths by State, Top Five = FL, MI, TX, NY, TN.

8. Injuries by State, Top Five = FL, MI, PA, NC, NY.

I'm no scientist, but my interpretation of this report would suggest that a man playing golf in July on a Wednesday afternoon in Florida has a pretty good chance of being struck by lightning and killed!

Shadow Creek: World's Most Expensive Golf Course

Ever wonder what the world's most expensive golf course costs to play and where it is? Look no further! The green fees at Shadow Creek Las Vegas will cost you $500.00 a round, which includes club rental, a personal caddie and a round trip limousine ride from the Strip.

Shadow Creek was designed by the maestro, Tom Fazio and built in 1989 by Steve Wynn, to the tune of 60 million dollars. So what do you get for 60 million these days? The site is a 1400 square meter 18 hole paradise. It was built from beneath the ground up meaning the dirt was dug from beneath the desert sand and pushed out to create a giant berm. Over 21,000 trees from 200 varieties were planted within and around the perimeter to seclude golfers from the common folk on the outside.

Shadow Creek was originally built for invited guests of the MGM Mirage Resorts (which include, The Belagio, MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay to name a few) only, with tee times set an hour apart. Now, all guests of the MGM Mirage properties are welcome to pay and play.

The course features, streams, waterfalls, exotic birds and amazing views. Each unique hole is its own entity and not visible from another. The club boasts that every one of their holes could be a feature hole at a regular course.

The course is played mainly by PGA professionals and spokespeople. It's rare if Shadow Creek sees more than 2 dozen rounds a day.

Here is an unofficial list of some of the other most expensive golf courses in the world:

* Pebble Beach Golf Links Calif. USA: $495.00, this does not include any perks like limo's etc.

Oldest Golfer: Hole in One at 102 Years Old

The other day I wrote about the youngest person to get a hole in one on a regulation sized golf course, then I get an email about the oldest person to get a hole in one on a regulation sized golf course. Where will the golf madness end?

A 102 year old woman named Elsie McLean has hit a hole in one on the par 3, 100 yard, fourth hole at Bidwell Park in California. She became the oldest person to sink a hole in one on a regulation sized course, by knocking off the prior 'oldest person to hit a hole in one' champion, 101 year old Harold Stilson, who hasn't commented on the recent events.

Though Elsie claims to have come close on a few occasions, this was Mrs. McLean's first hole in one. At first Elsie thought she'd lost her ball after driving off the tee. Because of the slope of the green, it was hard to see where the ball had gone; and lets face it at 102, we can't blame her for having a little vision difficulty. Her friends Kathy and Elizabeth found it in the cup and so the mayhem began.

Being the oldest person to get a hole in one is a massive responsibility and as one can assume the media bandwagon was ruthless. I believe the only publication not to contact Elsie for a spread was Australian FHM magazine. Elsie was even invited on Leno to talk about her courageous effort, which of course Elsie graciously declined.

"For an old lady, I still hit the ball pretty good" says Elsie.

Here's an interview with Mrs. McLean from Bidwell.

Youngest Person to Hit a Hole in One?

Golf my friends, is a cruel, sick and twisted game. It has let some 11 year old kid get a hole in one his third time on a course. The poor kids life is ruined! He's going to spend the rest of his days haunted by being the youngest person to get a hole in one.

Why wasn't he playing video games or eating bugs like the rest of the kids his age? Where were the parents to protect him from the big green monster? No, they let him run around on a golf course hitting hole in ones, breathing fresh air and spending time socializing with respectable people.

The story goes that this young show off comes along and gets a hole in one on a regulation sized 150 yard par 3. He was playing at the Mandan Municiple Golf Course in Bismarck, North Dakota using a driver he borrowed from his buddy. The group ahead of them saw it go in as well, so we know it wasn't just some story the kids made up after smoking the pot. So the question is; could young Allan Saylor be the youngest ever person to hit a hole in one?

The hole has bunkers on either sides of the green, so young Allan's drive was straight down the line.

This is how young Allan talked a news reporter through the moment. "It was a pretty low shot, a pretty flat drive, it probably rolled about 10 feet and the rest was in the air, it was probably one of my farthest shots." He then high-fived his friend Ethan, who's last name is coincidentally 'Luck', picked his nose and off they went.

The club golf pro, Patrick Wingard, sounds like he was beside himself with glee. He said that in the 3 years that he's been there no one has hit a hole in one on the par 3 sixth. In fact Wingard has never hit a hole in one in his 42 years and he's made a lot of money from golf, he says.

This sort of nonsense wouldn't happen in Australia, Australian's don't get holes in ones, we don't need them.

Golf Trivia & Interesting Facts

What is the derivation of the term "birdie"?
The term originated in the United States. In 19th century American slang bird referred to something great or special. Legend has it that around the turn of the century, golfers started to say, "That's a bird of a shot," which soon became birdie.

Why do golfers yell "Fore!" to warn other players that a ball may be headed their way?

The British Museum suggests that the term is derived from the word forecaddie. A forecaddie is a person who accompanies a group around the golf course to identify the locations of the group's shots. It is believed that on occasion the forecaddie needed to be warned about an approaching shot, and forecaddie was eventually shorted to fore.

Why is a game of golf most often referred to as a "round of golf"?
The earliest golf courses were built in a circular pattern. Old Tom Morris, who won four of the first eight British Open Championships in the 1860s eventually became a greens keeper and went on to design or improve about four dozen course in the British Isles. One of the more complex and enduring was Muirfield, site of numerous British Opens. It was here that he introduce the double-loop sequencing of nines, a structure that subjected the golfer to constantly changing wind conditions.

Golf Girls - Michelle Wie

Here's Michelle telling Frank the green keeper that she would like '1 meat pie' when he's on his way back around from the kiosk.

Here's a good trivia question. Which of these women golfers earns the most from endorsements off the golf course each year – Michelle Wie, the 18-year-old rookie who has not won a tournament in 32 events as a pro and who only has won about $1 million playing golf – Lorena Ochoa, the World No. 1, winner of 17 tournaments and $10 million in her career including $2.6m in 2008 – or Annika Sorenstam, winner of 72 events, $22 million in her career and $1.5 million in 2008. According to Forbes magazine in the US if you guessed Lorena, who earns about $10 million mainly from deals with Audi and Lacoste, you were wrong, and Annika with $11 million off course also was not correct. She was pipped by Wie, who although she attends Stanford College (Tiger’s old college) part-time and has played infrequently because of wrist injury, earns about $12 million in deals mainly with Nike and Sony.

Hot Golf Girls - Natalie Gulbis

Natalie Gulbis Biography
Name: Natalie Gulbis
Date of birth: January 7, 1983
From: Sacramento, California
College: University of Arizona
Height: 5 ft 9 in

Natalie Anne Gulbis was born on January 7, 1983, in Sacramento, California. Natalie's father John worked for the Sacramento County Probation Department, while her mother Barbara continues to act as purchasing director for a Sacramento medical laboratory. Natalie first hit the links at age 4, when her father began to teach her to play golf. She soon fell in love with the sport. At 7, she won her first tournament, and by 10, young Natalie was already breaking par.

In 1996, 13-year-old Natalie finished in second place in the California State Women's Amateur tournament. The top spot went to another future LPGA player, Dorothy Delasin. The following year, however, Natalie came back to win the tournament. That same year, she became the youngest player to ever qualify for an LPGA event, playing in the Long Drugs Challenge. Natalie would hold this record until 2002, when 12-year-old Michelle Wie made fresh claim to it.

Natalie continued developing her golf game at Granite Bay High School, where she played on the boys' team. Despite the fact that she was also committed to gymnastics and diving, Natalie still excelled academically, and graduated early, at age 16.

On the strength of her high school scores, Natalie was given a scholarship to Arizona State University in 1999. At that time, Arizona's golf team was the defending NCAA champs. In her freshman year, Natalie won three tournaments and was recognized with All-American honors. The next summer, she qualified for the US Women's Open, was ranked 34th among amateurs, and then was named MVP at the USA-Japan Collegiate Golf Championship. On the strength of these achievements, Natalie made the decision to turn pro.

Natalie went to the LPGA Qualifying Tournament or "Q-School" in the Autumn of 2000, and earned a spot on the tour on her first attempt. In 2001, Natalie moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. Her reason for doing so was initially strictly for tax purposes, but she soon grew to love her new home on Lake Las Vegas, about 30 minutes from the strip. Another advantage to her new location was its proximity to the Butch Harmon School of Golf, where she could take daily instruction from the same man who tutors golf heavyweights like Tiger Woods and Adam Scott.

In 2002, Natalie tied for fifth at the ShopRite LPGA Classic and for fourth at the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic. These two performances propelled her into second place in the Rookie of the Year point’s standings. The following year, Natalie tied for 12th at the Chick-fil-A Charity Championship and scored a career-low 63 in the third round of the Welch's/Fry's Championship. In 2004, Natalie finished in the Top 15 in five tournaments and carded her first LPGA career hole in one in the final round of the Safeway Classic.

Golf Trivia & Interesting Facts

* Why does a golf course have 18 holes?

In the early days of golf, nothing was standardized; courses ranged from 6 to 25 holes. St. Andrews had 22: 11 holes were laid out end to end from the clubhouse to the farthest point on the property. Golfers played the same holes out and, in reverse, the sames holes in. In 1764, the captain of the St. Andrews Golf Club combined several holes that were considered too short, thereby reducing 11 to 9, so that a complete round became 18. This soon became the standard because of the influence of the Society of St. Andrews Golfers.

* When was the golf tee invented, and by whom?
Dr. George F. Grant, the first African American graduate of Harvard College, received a patent for his tee in 1899. Grant was a dentist, and disliked getting his hands dirty before every hole by creating a mound of sand to use as a tee, as golfers had been doing for hundreds of years.

* When did golf arrive in the United States?
1887, John Reid asked a friend, to bring him some golf balls and clubs when he returned from his visit to Scotland. The next year, Reid laid out the first 3-hole golf course in Yonkers, N.Y.

* Where does the term "mulligan" come from?
David Mulligan who played at St. Lambert Country Club of Montreal in the 1920's. Mulligan played regularly with the same group of friends. Apparently, the road to the golf course was very uneven, so an extra shot was awarded on the first tee to Mulligan, the driver, because of the stress he had undergone. Another popular version has David Mulligan hitting a poor shot on the first tee and immediately hitting what he called a correction shot. His friends thought mulligan would be a better name.
